Flagyl Uses Flagyl is an antibiotic. It fights bacteria in your body. It is used to treat infections such as abdominal infections, skin and tissue infections, bone and joint infections, gynecologic infections, and respiratory tract infections. How to use Flagyl Take Flagyl exactly as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take each dose with a full glass of water. Flagyl can be taken with or without food. Never take more of this medication than is prescribed for you. Flagyl Side Effects This drug may cause following serious side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, or hives), congestive heart failure (swelling in your lower legs or feet, difficulty breathing, fatigue), severe stiffness or involuntary movements of your arms or legs, or confusion after discontinuing Flagyl or after a dose reduction. Other, less serious side effects are more likely to occur. Continue to take Flagyl and talk to your doctor if you experience darkening of your urine, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite, an unpleasant metallic taste in your mouth, constipation or mild diarrhea, headache, or swollen or sore tongue. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Flagyl Precautions Tell your doctor your medical history especially of: epilepsy or any other seizure disorder, any type of kidney disease, any type of liver disease, or a a stomach or intestinal disease. Do not drink alcohol while taking Flagyl, It may cause dizziness. Flagyl should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. Flagyl Drug Interactions Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription medication you may use, especially: phenytoin (Dilantin), lithium (Lithobid, Eskalith, others) Barbiturate such as phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton), amobarbital (Amytal), or secobarbital (Seconal). These medicines may decrease the effects of Flagyl.Interaction with drugs like warfarin (Coumadin), Maay occur Bleeding.
